Boarding at the stern

From the dock stepping aboard UM is easily achieved using the drop-down gangplank on the starboard quarter. We use this when on floating docks or at anchor to board the tender.

The canoe stern provides a wonderful seating area but also is a very functional design, making following seas very manageable.

The aft deck has seating and a table and has a canvas enclosure with privacy screens. This is truly a 3-season-plus addition to the boat and is a favorite place to chill, have dinner or cocktails.  Steps lead up to the upper deck through a hinged hatch.

Access to the Lazarette is also here.  The autohelm, steering cylinder, engine and filter spares, 40 gph watermaker, and new hydronic heater boiler are accessible in the lazarette.

Entering through the doors to the salon

From the canoe stern seating area you step through refinished teak doors into the salon. A bench seat adjacent to the galley bulkhead merges with the built-in cabinets to starboard. Ursa Major is an asymmetric cabin configuration with the walkway to starboard and full-width cabin to port.

Reclining swivel chairs and adjustable table complete the balance of the furnishings. New blinds, LED lighting, and newly varnished teak interior complete the salon.

Galley

Moving forward to the galley on the starboard side and built-in storage to port with drinks locker and main switch panel. The light and open feel of the galley has proven to be easy to use. There are two fridges and a freezer, storage space, a double sink, and filtered water faucets. A microwave oven, tiled backsplash, and porthole feature are recent additions. The galley has a 2017 Force 10 oven and 4 burner stove top fed by two 20# alloy propane tanks.

Electrical Switch Panel and System Monitoring

A new Victron monitoring panel with a touch screen allows easy viewing of the state of charge of the battery banks and thruster, starting and generator batteries. Solar power is managed through dedicated Victron controllers and is integrated with the existing electric power supply.

The Victron system provides a secure power management system with email notification in the event of power interruption and so much more.

Master Stateroom

From the salon, steps lead down to the companionway that runs to the bow.  To the port side is the combined Splendide Washer, vented dryer.  To starboard is the mid-ship spacious master cabin has a true walk-round Queen bed, bedside storage and ample underbed storage and draws. The starboard side of the cabin is dedicated to storage hidden behind three sliding doors. The mid-ship Master makes for a much quieter and less motion-sensitive experience and is a very desirable feature for full-time cruising.

The Master head has been reworked with the original tub being removed in 2020 and a full 30” x 60” walk-in shower with marble tiles. Electric head and new black water tank plumbing, additional air flow and rationalization of the system will leave years of trouble-free service.

Work area and Companionway Storage

Moving forward the companionway from the work shop area and hanging lockers

Guest Cabin and office

There is a featured full-sized bronze porthole that keeps you connected to the exterior and provides ventilation to the guest cabin/office.

The cabin has a double bunk, desk, and vanity mirror.

Pilot House

The navigation system was completely replaced, starting in 2018 through to 2021.  The Garmin network has 2 chart-plotters, a depth sounder and redundant depth transducer, Multi-function displays, Auto–Helm, Radar, AIS, Wind, Radios, with key information duplicated on the Flybridge. The chart-tables engine, instrumentation and consul were rebuilt as a custom woodworking project in 2020.  All instruments have been replaced or serviced and recalibrated.

The engines are in great mechanical condition and oil analysis data is trended on each oil change. The starboard gearbox was professionally rebuilt in 2020, driven by oil analysis results. Engine RPM are synchronized using a Glendenning controller. RPM are measured through a engine-driven sender to digital read outs. These systems were installed new in 2019 and 2022.

Mechanical and Electrical Room

Access to the engines and generator is through two hatches. The floor is covered with top-of-the-range Soundown 3/4” 2# sound-deadening foam floor underlay.

Engines

New Balmar alternators were added in 2022, 170A and 100A running through Balmar external controllers and Centerfield comptroller.

Charging of batteries on Gen or solar is through the integrated Victron system completed in 2022.

Heat exchangers are changed out at 3 years and spares are on board.

Raw water pumps upgraded. Wet exhaust elbows upgraded to cast SS units. New mufflers and exhaust hose.

New engine mountings and alignment in 2020. Oil change pump oil for all three engines.

Mechanical and Electrical Room

Engines Battery bank increased rewired and installed in 2022.

House Bank was installed in March 2021 with 1,125 AH of capacity.

Starter motors changed.

New generator and Starter batteries in January 2024.

Fuel systems for engines have dual primary systems plus a polishing system and fuel transfer system.

Engine servicing and adjustments carried out per owner's manuals.

Victron Methodology and equipment was professionally installed throughout.

The system is proven, but we took the opportunity to refine our system in 2022 to upgrade the solar management system.

Batteries are equalized monthly.

Heating / Cooling System

Ursa Major has the conventional heating/cooling system found in most trawlers with reverse heat exchangers. There are 4 zones. 3 of those zone compressors and pumps were replaced in 2021. The PH system is completely new 2021.

A new hydronic system for heating was added in 2021 too.  The system has 4 zones, each controlled by a thermostat and programable timer. The heated antifreeze is pumped around the boat with the feed and return running through lockers to air them. The system keeps the boat warm for many hours after it is switched off and also has demisters for the PH windows.

The installation was featured in MTOA magazine.
